Our days can be chaotic. We rarely have boring days. I never feel like my to do list is completed. We juggle a lot of things at one time.
Lately we have become masters at multi-tasking as we prepare for a lot of activities with the teams, the church, and the school.
A few days ago, we needed to check off a lot of things on our list. I sent our director a text and asked for the girls who will be turning 15 in 2025 to wait for me outside of the school so I could provide transportation to my house. I pulled up to the school and filled my car with some of the girls.
One girl, “Dulce”, is new to our school. Her mother cleans the streets and finds recyclables in the dump. We have observed her for the past year so we were thrilled to give her the opportunity to study at our school.
“Dulce” was sitting in the front seat of my car as I sped off from the school to my house. As I made the first turn, I looked and saw “Dulce” with her hand over her mouth. No Way! I hit my brakes hard. I asked her if she was sick and kindly told her to exit the car if she was about to be sick. I could not do clean up in the passenger seat. (I was going to have to pull the Eddie Turrentine card. The thought of just lighting a match did cross my mind!). She assured me that she was not sick but as we continued to drive she seemed a bit scared. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was likely her first time to ride in a car. Sitting in the front seat while the car climbs the steepness of my driveway makes most people a little uneasy. Imagine if it was your first time in a car!
We pulled up to my garage where Mrs. Sandra and Mrs. Ann had set up a sewing shop. The garage was filled with beautiful, sparkly dresses ready for the girls to pick the perfect dress for their 15th birthday party.
Dulce was wide-eyed as she looked at all of the dresses. She giggled as she tried on several gorgeous gowns. Then she looked at herself in the mirror wearing a beautiful blue and purple dress adorned with lots of sequins. She found her dress!
These are the moments that I savor. In the midst of the chaos, the moment of a young girl standing in front of a mirror in awe of a beautiful dress is priceless.
How did Dulce return back to the school? She walked!
